Bio & Experience

Jonathan is a South African attorney in private practice as the principal of Kaplan Attorneys Incorporated, a boutique commercial and litigation practice based in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

He developed a thorough grounding in landlord and tenant law - including evictions, rent recovery, and sectional title disputes - during his articles and early post-admission practice. Between private practice stints, he spent a year working directly within a property company, gaining hands-on commercial and operational experience that informs his practical approach to property and construction mandates.

Before founding his own firm, he served as a director at Andrew Garratt Incorporated, where he advised and represented a broad client base across construction, business rescue, property development, health and fitness, software, security, and e-hailing industries, as well as individual clients.

His practice spans commercial and general litigation, contract drafting and advisory, and specialist work in construction and property litigation, lender-side litigation (including purchase order funding and invoice discounting), debtor and surety defence, drafting and enforcement of restraints of trade, and outdoor advertising law. He has appeared extensively in the Magistrates Court, litigated numerous High Court matters including urgent applications, and has instructed in Supreme Court of Appeal proceedings.

He advises directors and companies - both private and public - on commercial transactions and disputes, with particular focus on practical outcomes and early strategic clarity.
